At Holmes we use a learning-based grading system that focuses on student proficiency in specific learning targets and learning goals within each subject. A proficiency scale of 4 to 1 is used where a 4 represents mastery similar to the traditional A. Academic achievement is graded apart from habits and behaviors related to learning. Behaviors like neatness, creativity, timeliness, effort, etc. are NOT reflected in grades. Homework is typically used for practice and preparation but not included in the grade calculation. The learning targets and goals are communicated to students giving them a clearer understanding of their strengths and areas for improvement. Learning Based Grading is used across the district.
